Practice Green Health, 2019 Data

Another year of assisting health systems with Practice Green Health awards has come to a close!

Key Green Solutions has been helping upload data to the Practice Green Health award application for years. This year, we were able to help 13 healthcare systems: Bronson, Dignity, Harvard’s Beth Israel Deaconess, Hackensack, Johns Hopkins, Montefiore, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Sutter, Seattle Children’s, Stanford, University of California, Veterans Affairs, and Valley Health.

Key Green Solutions is a great tool to use for applications such as Practice Green Health and the Cool Food Pledge. When you don’t have time to put together all the numbers, we step in and do it for you. On November 10, 2011, the University of Maryland Medical Center and Denise Choiniere, sustainability manager, are winners of Maryland Hospitals for Healthy Environment (MD H2E) awards.

The first annual Nursing Leadership in Environmental Health Award was presented to Denise Choiniere, MS, RN, sustainability manager for University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Choiniere, the first full-time sustainability manager in a Maryland hospital, spearheaded a number of environmental initiatives at UMMC, including a hazardous pharmaceutical waste management program, Earth Day events, and a weekly farmers’ market.
UMMC won the Trailblazer award for focusing on lighting conservation and upgrades in the past year. The goals of their project included turning off lights when not in use and when daylight is sufficient in atriums and hallways, replace inefficient light bulbs with more efficient bulbs, and establish a baseline to monitor changes. Occupancy sensors and photo cell sensors were installed and lights in mechanical rooms were placed on automated controls.

Key Green Solutions (KGS) exhibited at the Maryland Hospitals for Healthy Environment (MD H2E) conference on November 10, 2011.

MD H2E is a technical assistance and networking initiative that promotes environmental sustainability in health care. Participants include hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, research laboratories, and other ancillary health care providers in Maryland. Key Green Solutions LLC, the leading hospital sustainability management software company, is proud to be a partner with Carroll Hospital Center and University of Maryland Medical Center, two award winning hospitals with MD H2E.

Carroll Hospital Center receives 2011 Trailblazer Award from Maryland Hospitals for Healthy Environment

The award was given to recognize the hospital for its ability to effectively track and quantify its many environmentally friendly initiatives through the Key Green Solutions sustainability management web-based software. The software showed, for example, how the hospital’s natural gas consumption and red bag waste was reduced by 30 percent in 2011 due to the hospital’s green initiatives.

Spectrum Health System receives Practice Greenhealth 2011 System for Change award and others

Since the System for Change award’s program began in 2008, only 17 health care systems in the U.S. have received this award. This is a great accomplishment for Spectrum and indicates a shift towards creating a sustainability culture.
Additionally, Spectrum Health Butterworth and Blodgett Hospitals received Partner for Change with Distinction. And Spectrum Health United Hospital received Partner for Change.

Metro Health Hospital receives Practice Greenhealth 2011 Environmental Leadership Circle award

This is the third year in a row that Metro Health has received this award. The Environmental Leadership Circle is the premier award recognizing health care facilities that exemplify environmental excellence and are setting the highest standards for environmental practices in health care. To be considered, facilities must meet the criteria for the mercury-free award, recycle at least 25 percent of their total waste, have implemented numerous other innovative pollution prevention programs, and be leaders in their community.
